Floyd Mayweather opens as prohibitive favorite vs. Marcos
Maidana:
William Hill U.S. has installed Floyd Mayweather as the prohibitive favorite for his May 3 bout against Marcos Maidana, according to senior trader Adam Pullen. Maidana, the WBA welterweight champion, is being offered at odds of +750 at the chain of sports books.
The 12-round welterweight unification bout MAYWEATHER vs MAIDANA LIVE STREAM fight is expected to be held at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, site of Mayweather’s previous eight bouts, although Barclays Center in Brooklyn is a making a push to host the event.
The LVH SuperBook is waiting until the venue is announced before posting odds on the fight, but is “looking around Mayweather -1200 Maidana +750,” the same price being offered at William Hill, LVH assistant manager Jeff Sherman noted on Twitter.
Mayweather (45-0, 26 KOs) won the WBC welterweight belt against Robert Guerrero on May 4, 2013, and the WBC and WBA junior middleweight titles from Canelo Alvarez on Sept. 14, both in convincing fashion, even though the victory over Canelo came by a controversial majority decision.
“Money”, via his Twitter and Instagram accounts on Super Bowl Sunday, asked fans to choose either Maidana and Amir Khan as his next opponent. Per USA Today, the “vote was overwhelmingly in Maidana’s favor.”
In his last fight, on Dec. 14, “El Chino” (35-3, 31 KOs) was dominant in handing Adrien Broner his first-ever defeat, knocking Broner down twice and earning an easy unanimous decision.
“Marcos Maidana’s last performance immediately brought him to my attention,” Mayweather said in a statement. “He is an extremely skilled fighter who brings knockout danger to the ring. I think this is a great fight for me and he deserves the opportunity to see if he can do what 45 others have tried to do before him — beat me.”
But promoter Bob Arum thought Khan deserved a shot at Mayweather and had a hunch Mayweather was going to offer the fight to Maidana instead.
“What he has done to Amir Khan is absolutely disgraceful, whether he ends up fighting him, or he doesn’t,” Arum told the Daily Telegraph last week. “My feeling is he is not going to fight him, but it’s disgraceful to do that to another human being because you are in a position to do that. Just because he has the power where you can do something ke that. … I think he will fight Maidana.”
The May 3 bout is the third of Mayweather’s six-fight deal with Showtime, after which Mayweather has said he’ll retire.
Pacquiao vs. Bradley
While there’s not a lot of optimism around the boxing world that a Mayweather-Pacquiao fight will ever be made, the Filipino has a bout with Timothy Bradley scheduled for April 12.
At William Hill and the LVH, the odds for the rematch of the June 2012 fight between the welterweights – which ended in a split decision in favor of Bradley in one of the most controversial decisions in boxing history – have moved in opposite directions
William Hill opened Pacquiao -200/ Bradley +175, but the odds are -190/+170 as of Tuesday. At the SuperBook, the fight opened Pacquiao -185/Bradley +165 and has moved to -215/+185.
Pacquiao wants to avoid an ending similar to his first fight with Bradley.
“Our objective is to knock Bradley out in the early rounds during the Mayweather vs Maidana Live Stream fight to avoid another controversial decision,” Pacquiao’s assistant coach and trainer Buboy Fernandez told Philippine Daily Inquirer last week.
